Oh F***, it's Monday again...

Oh great... Monday again. That on top of the fact that I missed yesterday's post... no excuses really, was just one of those Sundays. (hey, maybe the comic page from Saturday counts as a double-post?) Anyway... some random sketchy stuff this mawning -- have a good week, everyone!!

Saturday Night Zombie

What... weekend comes and I suddenly slack off from my "a drawing a day" commitment? No fear, with all the running around today, it took a bit longer to get this finished. It's a new page for the Global Comic Jam's contest for new stories... this is an idea for a page that's been in my ideas drawer for quite a while. Basically, as an opening for a story, this could go in just about any direction -- and that was the idea. (I'm using the word "idea" a lot in this post... no idea why? -- DAMN, there I go again!!) Well, had fun doing it... and now I'm off to either watch some mindless drivel on TV or play some mindless computer games... oh yeah!!

Let's do the Time Warp again!

Busy morning with bloody annoying builders and tilers making bloody annoying racket with hammering, grinding, drilling, cutting tiles... I can see how some people just lose it and shove a loaded magazine into that automatic rifle and just...!! Well you get the idea. Hence quickie pic this morning... some other time we can enter into discourse why I like drawing robots so much.

Heard from an awesome comic artist this morning -- guy called Ramon Perez who amongst many other things draws one of my favourite webcomics Butternutsquash, which unfortunately is on hiatus at the moment, but you can always go read the archives... check out his blog too.

Ok, boys and girls... time to go stock up on Panados... have a lekka Thursday!

KA-ZING! DOUF-DOUF! FLABBA-DONG!

(click for full size image)
Wednesday morning and still going strong with the drawing a day thang. More pre-cafeine weirdness... love those whacky cartoon phonetic sound-effect thingies, ever since I read the old Mad magazines when I was a kid, especially Don Martin, he was the master at those.

Oh, and here's a bonus image -- the five minute drawing of the nude girl in my little pocket-size moleskin notebook got the ten minute photoshop treatment, et voila!

Day 4: Skaramoosh... I sing the Fandango

(click on all images for larger view)
Okay, this is what happens when you don't read the fine print. Jason challenges me to a Drawing a Day for Life and I agree?? Am I nuts?! That means the only way to get out of this is for me jump in front of a bus barrelling down Jan Smuts Avenue (wait, have they renamed that one yet?... I lose track). Oh well, here goes... today's skribble. I fear this whole thing might turn into "Who of us can draw weirder stuff"?

Oh, and here's what Pedro in an earlier comment referred to -- I sketched up a version of a wild insane comic character he created, called Devil Cow.

Also, here's a peek at an animation project I'm currently working on for Mindpool Productions, to be used in a SABC kid's education show called Just Chill... had lots of fun creating this little Pig character called "Crackling"... who interacts with the Elephant in the picture -- they are used for little animated links between shows.

Here's a sample of one of the animated backgrounds into which the announcers heads get blue-screened and added to the top of the cartoon characters that then perform a series of looped actions, so they can be shown talking as long or short a time necessary... this one obviously a theater scene -- note Crackling in attendance and the Elephant Cupid which flies by occasionally on his rope...

Day 3: I gotta stop counting the days...

(click to see full size image)
The above was drawn while I was getting my Monday morning caffeine fix at my local Mugg & Bean in Parkhurst. And boy did I need it... and that is partly due to the fact that yesterday afternoon at a friend's 40th birthday party braai, he openend a bottle of some fiendish local Tequila made down in Graaf Reinett from somethin called an Agave cactus... I think it's some kind of large blue-ish green aloe-type plant growing wild in that part of the Karoo? Oh well, enough said about that.
Jason has thrown down the gauntlet for a daily draw-off -- I shall accept the challenge, but not sure what that challenge would entail... we shall see. Anyway -- Happy Monday to all!

Day 2 - Monster Breath

Actually drew this yesterday evening while waiting in a little joint in Parkhurst for my Chinese take-aways. The food was okay-ish... but this morning I wake up with this foul monster breath that only a liberal dental hygiene session could banish -- talk about a premonition!
I LOVE drawing monsters... scary, silly, funny... the whole lot, and hey, while we're at it... aliens too. Just too much juvenile fun for my own good. Speaking of which... a while back I had published in Mamba comix chapter two of my alien-monster-madness comic An Ordinary Day -- like I said, lots of fun and not to be taken too seriously... but where exactly all the weirdness comes from, no idea. I don't think I really wanna know :-)

Oh hell, I thought I'd give this a try. I have an online sketchbook website called My Dog Ate My Sketchbook , but somehow that doesn't seem to force me to maintain a regular posting schedule -- sooo, seeing the good stuff that my fellow SA 'toonist Jason Bronkhorst is posting over at his new blog @random , I decided to give this blog thing a try.
I mean -- a drawing a day, how hard can it be?

For those who don't know me, my name is Rico and I'm a professional cartoonist and probably best known for drawing the South African cartoon strip Madam & Eve -- alongside a wide variety of other cartooning and illustration jobs. If you like, take a peek at my porfolio site.
Ok, the stuff that I'll be putting up here will probably be a mix of commercial work and off-the-wall stuff that happens after hours... consider yerselves warned.

Also, together with a few other SA cartoonists, we've just kick-started a new collaborative online sketchbook blog called SKRIBBL -- still early days, but we hope to soon have it crammed full of sketches, drawings etc based on weekly themes... hopefully it'll turn out to be a LOT of fun!
Another place I contribute to when I can is the Global Comic Jam, a site where a bunch of comic artists from all over the world contribute to a series of comic jams, this is, each artists draws adds a page at a time to ongoing stories making them up as we go along.
